This review explains how Insureon works, which lines you can buy through it, what its customers report paying and how claims and service are handled. It is based on Insureon’s own published information and the 2022 acquisition announcement, as of October 2026.
What Insureon is and how buying works
Insureon is a Chicago-based digital insurance agency for small businesses. It says it works as both an agent and a broker: its agents place coverage with insurance companies, and it also employs brokers who look for specialized coverage outside standard policies.
Its roots go back to TechInsurance Group, founded in 1997 to sell insurance online to small technology firms. TechInsurance launched Insureon in 2011 and bought Insurance Noodle, a wholesale brokerage owned by Willis Group Holdings, in 2014. In a March 1, 2022 announcement, Hub International agreed to acquire the Insureon agency and brand while Bold Penguin acquired its technology platform, which Hub licenses. Insureon’s site now describes it as part of Hub and as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, and it also runs TechInsurance.com for technology businesses.
Buying starts with one online application. Quotes appear in your Insureon account, sometimes after a delay, and you can pay online and download a certificate of insurance, which Insureon says often happens within a few hours of applying. Licensed agents are available by phone or email to help with limits, endorsements and unusual risks, and the phone line runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central time, Monday to Friday, according to its site.
Coverage it offers and who issues it
Insureon does not underwrite policies. The insurance company you choose issues the policy and pays claims, and your premium payments go to that carrier rather than to Insureon.
Insureon says it has access to more than 100 insurers. The top providers it lists are The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Acuity, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Chubb, Nationwide, AmTrust, Hiscox, The Hanover, Travelers and USAA. Its longer list also includes biBERK, Coalition, Coterie, Guard, Progressive Commercial and USLI, along with wholesale brokers such as AmWINS, Burns & Wilcox and RT Specialty. In 2026 it announced a partnership with LIO Insurance that starts with special event coverage.
Lines available through Insureon, according to its site, include:
- General liability and business owner’s policies
- Professional liability and errors and omissions
- Workers’ compensation
- Cyber insurance
- Commercial auto, commercial property and inland marine, including contractors’ tools and equipment
- Commercial umbrella, directors and officers, employment practices liability and commercial crime
- Product liability and business bonds
What Insureon publishes about prices
Insureon publishes cost figures based on policies its customers bought. Its general liability cost page, updated March 30, 2026, says the numbers it calls averages are calculated from the median premium, using data on 100,000 small business owners. Most of those customers have fewer than five employees, revenue from around $50,000 to more than $200,000 and five years or less in business.
For general liability, Insureon reports that 22% of its customers pay less than $30 a month and 41% pay $30 to $60. Annual premiums run from $265 to $3,030, and 85% of customers choose limits of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate.
These figures are not quotes. Insureon notes that your premium depends on your industry, location, number of employees, revenue, claims history and the limits and deductible you choose.
| Coverage | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| General liability | $45 | $538 |
| Workers’ compensation | $54 | $643 |
| Business owner’s policy | $83 | $990 |
| Professional liability | $88 | $1,051 |
| Cyber insurance | $129 | $1,552 |
| Commercial auto | $245 | Not published |
Who it suits and who it may not
Insureon’s published customer data describes mostly very small businesses. Specialty Program Group lists the industries it serves as including IT, consulting, construction and contracting, cleaning, food, healthcare, landscaping, personal care, retail, accounting and professional services. It fits owners who want to compare several carriers from one application, buy online and pull certificates themselves.
It may fit less well in a few situations. Insureon says it does not offer coverage to businesses based outside the United States. For-hire trucking is not among the industry groups listed on Specialty Program Group’s Insureon page, so a motor carrier that needs federal or state insurance filings should confirm availability before applying. High-net-worth owners can use HUB Private Client Small Business Solutions, which combines Insureon’s platform with Hub’s private client advisors.
How claims and service work
Claims go to the insurance company that issued your policy. Insureon’s claims page says your insurer’s website explains how to report a claim, or you can call the insurer directly, and Insureon’s agents can advise you along the way. It suggests having your policy number, a description of what happened, when and where it happened and contact details for everyone involved.
Day-to-day service runs through Insureon’s client portal and your account manager. You request certificates from the Certificates tab once a policy is active, and Insureon suggests calling your account manager if a certificate is urgent. To cancel, you contact your account manager. You can pay annually or in installments, paid to the carrier, usually by credit card or check depending on the carrier.
What to compare and ask before buying
Because each Insureon quote comes from a different insurer, the policies behind similar prices can differ. Ask your agent to show you these points for every quote:
- Which company issues the policy and whether it is admitted or surplus lines in your state
- Per-occurrence and aggregate limits, the deductible and whether the form is occurrence or claims-made
- Exclusions that matter for your work, such as subcontractor, professional services or vehicle exclusions
- Endorsements your contracts require, such as additional insured or waiver of subrogation
- The carrier’s payment plan and any installment fees
- The carrier’s claims contact and reporting deadlines
- The issuing insurer’s current AM Best rating, checked directly with AM Best
How it fits with getting several quotes
Insureon already compares several carriers, but you see only the insurers on its panel that accept your application and class of business. Another broker or a carrier that sells direct may work with different insurers, so a second set of quotes can show whether your risk prices or is covered differently elsewhere.
Compare quotes on the same limits, deductibles and endorsements so the prices are like for like. A broker such as Florin can compare quotes from several insurers alongside any Insureon quote you already have.
