This page explains what Hiscox is, which company issues each policy and what Hiscox publishes about prices. It then covers how claims work and what to check before you buy. Facts come from Hiscox’s US and group websites and its 2025 results, and product details are stated as of October 2026.

What Hiscox is and how buying works

Hiscox Group says it can trace its roots to 1901 in the Lloyd’s market, is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is headquartered in Bermuda, with over 3,000 staff. Its US business, Hiscox USA, sells under the Hiscox name, and Hiscox’s US site says it has over 600,000 small business customers.

In its results for 2025, published on February 25, 2026, Hiscox describes Hiscox USA as providing specialty commercial insurance for nano- to medium-sized businesses, sold directly, through partners and through traditional brokers. Hiscox USA’s written premium grew 4.4% to $961.5 million in 2025. The direct and partner channel grew 7.0% to $580.5 million and the broker channel grew 0.7% to $381.0 million.

You can get a quote online or speak with a licensed agent at Hiscox by phone. Hiscox also runs a quote-and-bind portal for independent agents and a separate product range for brokers, so the same policies can reach you through an intermediary.

Coverage it offers and who issues each policy

The footer of Hiscox’s small business pages says its policies are underwritten by Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., 125 S. Wacker Dr., Chicago. Three lines on its menu work differently, and the policy for those comes from another company.

  • General liability: Hiscox’s page says it starts from $30 a month, with limits up to $2 million, same-day coverage and an instant certificate of insurance.
  • Professional liability or errors and omissions: covers negligence claims about your services, and Hiscox says it may offer retroactive coverage for claims made during the policy about earlier work.
  • Business owners policy: general liability combined with cover for business property and lost income after property damage.
  • Cyber security: breach response, data recovery, phishing losses and privacy lawsuit defense, as listed on Hiscox’s site.
  • Workers’ compensation: Hiscox says it has teamed with The Hartford, and the policies are underwritten by Hartford Fire Insurance.
  • Commercial auto: Hiscox says it has teamed with GEICO, with a separate phone line for quotes.
  • Umbrella, property and inland marine: Hiscox says it has partnered with Tivly for these additional coverages.

What Hiscox publishes about prices

Hiscox shows sample premiums on its product pages for two consulting businesses per line. It labels them illustrative and says your premium may vary, so treat them as examples of how limits, location and business size move the price rather than as quotes. Hiscox also says you can get up to a 5% discount when you bundle general liability with another line such as professional liability or cyber.

Who it suits and who it may not

Hiscox’s own lines are liability, property and cyber policies for small firms, and its agent page lists the sectors it focuses on, including architecture and engineering, consultants, contractors and handypersons, food and drink, health and beauty, marketing and media, professional services, real estate and retail. Its online coverage finder asks whether you give professional advice, hold sensitive data, own your building, work from home or at a client’s premises and have employees.

As of October 2026, Hiscox’s state page says it is licensed to offer small business insurance in 49 states plus the District of Columbia and that coverage is unavailable in Alaska. Its site also says coverage is not available in all states or classes of business.

If your main exposure is vehicles or employee injuries, note that Hiscox does not issue those policies itself. Workers’ comp comes from The Hartford and commercial auto from GEICO, so a business with drivers and staff may end up with policies, bills and claims contacts at more than one company.

How claims and service work

Hiscox’s claims center says you can report a claim online at any time, by phone during extended weekday and weekend hours or by mail to its claims center in Atlanta. After you report, Hiscox says it emails a reference number and emergency contact details, assigns a specialized claims professional, validates coverage and then contacts you with a decision.

For property losses under a BOP, Hiscox says your representative may work with an appraiser to agree the value before payment. For liability claims under general liability, professional liability or a BOP, it says it will appoint an experienced attorney if necessary. Workers’ comp and auto policies are issued by other insurers, so report those claims to the company named on the policy, and if you bought through a broker, Hiscox asks you to contact the broker for policy changes.

What to compare and ask before buying

These questions apply to Hiscox and to any other insurer you are considering.

  • Which company underwrites each policy on your quote, and who handles its claims.
  • Whether the limits meet your contracts: Hiscox’s general liability goes up to $2 million, and some clients ask for more.
  • For professional liability, the retroactive date and whether past work is covered.
  • Whether a bundle discount applies and how the total compares with separate policies.
  • Whether you need lines Hiscox places with other insurers, such as workers’ comp or commercial auto.

How it fits with getting several quotes

Hiscox’s sample premiums show how much location, revenue and limits change the price, even for similar consulting firms. Comparing the same limits, deductibles and retroactive dates across insurers shows where your business fits and whether one company can write all the lines you need.

A broker such as Florin can compare quotes from several insurers for your liability, property and other lines in one review.
