What State Farm is and how buying works

State Farm is a mutual insurance group based in Bloomington, Illinois. Its newsroom says State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company issued its first policy on June 7, 1922. State Farm reports more than 19,200 agent offices and over 62,000 employees serving more than 96 million policies and accounts, commercial policies included.

Business insurance is sold through local State Farm agents, who State Farm describes as small business owners themselves. You can enter a ZIP code to start a quote for a business owner fffds policy or commercial auto, ask an agent to contact you or take a three-question product quiz. For other lines, the page points you to an agent.

Policies come from companies in the State Farm group. The disclosures on its business pages list State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company and State Farm General Insurance Company, plus State Farm Lloyds and State Farm County Mutual Insurance Company of Texas in Texas. State Farm says some professional liability coverage is a stand-alone policy from State Farm Specialty Products, so ask which company will issue each of your policies.

Coverage it offers and for whom

State Farm fffds business owner fffds policy combines property and liability coverage. It names fitness studios, art galleries, photographers, dance schools and locksmiths among the businesses it suits. Beyond the core coverages, the policy page lists accounts receivable, loss of income, money and securities, equipment breakdown, computer property, seasonal increase and sign coverage.

Optional BOP add-ons include data compromise and identity restoration, sewer and drain backup, employee dishonesty and utility interruption. State Farm does not list a stand-alone cyber policy among its small business products.

Commercial auto and contractor details

State Farm fffds commercial auto page lists liability, medical payments, collision, comprehensive and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. It names artisan and service contractors, farmers and ranchers, florists and caterers as typical customers. Employers fffd non-owned and hired car coverage, for employees who drive their own cars or for short-term rentals, is a separate option whose availability varies by state.

State Farm also offers Drive Safe & Save Business for monitoring employee driving habits. Its FAQ says tools carried in a vehicle are typically covered under an inland marine policy, not the auto policy.

The contractors policy is aimed at trades such as electricians, plumbers, landscapers and HVAC businesses. State Farm lists business personal property, building property, liability, completed operations and property of others, plus installation floater coverage for equipment you transport to a customer fffds site and mobile equipment coverage for tools on location.

Who it suits and who it may not

Based on State Farm fffds own descriptions, its products are built around small local businesses: shops, studios, service providers, contractors, farms and ranches, condo and homeowners associations and nonprofits that want to work with a named local agent. Some situations call for extra checking.

  • You want to buy and get covered entirely online: State Farm routes business quotes through an agent.
  • You run for-hire or long-haul trucking: State Farm fffds commercial auto page does not describe motor carrier operations or federal filings, so ask directly whether your operation qualifies.
  • You are in California: State Farm General stopped accepting new applications for all business and personal property and casualty lines effective May 27, 2023, so confirm current availability with an agent.
  • You need group life for a small team: State Farm offers it to groups of five or more, in every state except Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
  • You need specialist professional liability: State Farm says the cost depends on the number of practitioners, services offered and limits, so confirm your profession is eligible before relying on it.

How claims and service work

For most business claims, State Farm says to start by contacting your agent. Its claims page asks you to prevent further damage, keep records of repair costs and check with your claim representative before discarding items. If a third party says you caused injury or damage, State Farm says it will investigate and, subject to the policy, adjust claims where you may be legally liable.

Workers fffd compensation claims have their own process. State Farm says you must report every employee injury as soon as it happens, using the state-specific First Report of Injury form in the claim kit available to policyholders, and you can report by phone, fax or mail.

One login shows all your business policies and bills, and you can create an ACORD 25 certificate of liability insurance online for several policy types. State Farm says premium audits are required on its workers fffd comp and contractors policies.

What to compare and ask before buying

State Farm states that prices are based on rating plans that vary by state and that coverage details may not be available for every business. Get the following answered in writing before you compare its quote with others.

  • Which State Farm company issues each policy, and is each line available in your state for your type of business?
  • Which optional coverages are in the quote: tools and equipment, data compromise, employee dishonesty, sewer backup, hired and non-owned auto?
  • What payroll or sales figures is the quote based on, and how will the audit adjust your premium?
  • What limits apply? State Farm says its umbrella starts at $1 million and needs an underlying business or auto policy.
  • In California, does the quote include State Farm General fffds temporary 0.26% fee on commercial renewals effective from January 1, 2026?

How it fits with getting several quotes

A State Farm agent quotes State Farm fffds own policies, so one appointment gives you one insurer fffds price and terms. State Farm says what you pay depends on factors such as your building, inventory, vehicles, payroll and industry, and other insurers weigh those factors differently.

Line up the same limits, deductibles and add-ons across every quote so you are comparing like with like. A broker such as Florin can compare quotes from several insurers alongside the one you get from a State Farm agent.
