This page compares the two for business owners with work vehicles, from a contractor’s van to an owner-operator’s tractor. It covers what each company is, the coverages each lists, who each is set up for and how buying, filings and claims work. Facts come from each company’s own website and Progressive’s 2025 Form 10-K, and details are stated as of October 2026.
How each one works
Progressive Commercial is the Commercial Lines business of The Progressive Corporation, a publicly traded insurer based in Mayfield Village, Ohio. Its commercial auto policies are underwritten by Progressive Casualty Insurance Company and affiliates. You can buy online, by phone or through an independent agent, and the 10-K says about 90% of its 2025 commercial auto business, excluding rideshare, came through agents.
GEICO, short for Government Employees Insurance Company, was founded in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin and is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. GEICO’s commercial auto page says coverage is underwritten by Government Employees Insurance Company, and in some cases is provided through GEICO Insurance Agency, LLC with National Indemnity Company, a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate, or with non-affiliated insurers. You can quote online, call GEICO’s commercial line or find a GEICO agent.

Coverage differences
Both offer the standard commercial auto coverages: liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments or personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage. The differences show up in the extras each lists.
GEICO’s commercial auto page lists new vehicle replacement cost, hired auto coverage, employee personal vehicle coverage and blanket additional insured for contract requirements. Its truck page lists motor truck cargo with reefer breakdown, trailer interchange, non-owned trailer physical damage, motor truck general liability, hired and non-owned auto and non-trucking liability. GEICO says liability is automatic for trailers under 3,000 pounds, while heavier or multi-axle trailers are not covered unless listed.
Progressive’s truck page lists motor truck cargo, trailer interchange, non-trucking liability, heavy truck roadside assistance, general liability for truckers and rental reimbursement with downtime. Its 10-K says its Cargo Plus endorsement, which adds water, corrosion and rust protection to cargo, was available in 49 states at the end of 2025.
Who each tends to fit
For cars, vans and pickups used for work, both fit similar businesses. GEICO names electricians, plumbers, HVAC firms, contractors, landscapers, caterers and real estate and sales businesses among those it often covers. Progressive’s 10-K groups its customers into five markets: business auto, contractors, for-hire transportation, tow trucks and for-hire specialty such as dump, log and garbage trucks. It says its policies cover about two vehicles on average, excluding large fleets.
The difference widens with size and trucking. GEICO describes its truck program as serving owner-operators, commercial drivers and small fleets of up to 9 vehicles, including dry van, reefer, flatbed, auto hauler and dirt, sand and gravel operations. Progressive handles larger fleets through a separate fleet and specialty unit and lists tow trucks as a core market.
How you like to buy also matters. If you work with an independent agent, Progressive’s 10-K says most of its commercial auto business comes through that channel, while GEICO’s pages point you to its online quote, its phone line and GEICO agents.
Prices, telematics, filings and service
Progressive publishes its own 2025 figures: new customers with clean records paid a median of $207 a month per vehicle for business auto and $203 for contractors, and its for-hire truck averages ranged from $734 to $926 a month. GEICO’s commercial auto and truck pages do not publish average premiums; GEICO lists USDOT compliance, cargo, truck condition, coverages and inspection history among its truck price factors.
Both run safe-driving programs. Progressive says new customers save an average of 9% by enrolling in Snapshot ProView, and its 10-K describes Smart Haul, which uses data from a carrier’s existing ELD. GEICO’s DriveEasy Pro program offers savings and tools such as dashcam video and real-time vehicle tracking.
Both handle FMCSA and state filings: each says filings are usually completed within 48 hours of your request. Progressive says commercial claims can be filed online or by phone 24/7, with a representative typically calling by the end of the business day. GEICO says its commercial specialists help with vehicle and driver changes, coverage adjustments and claims, and that you can manage payments and ID cards online.
Why comparing several quotes matters
Progressive’s 10-K counts about 340 competitors in the U.S. commercial auto market, and each prices vehicles, drivers and radius in its own way. Compare quotes for the same liability limit, deductibles and listed vehicles, trailers and drivers, and confirm which company issues the policy.
An independent broker such as Florin can compare commercial auto quotes from several insurers in one review.
