How much does commercial auto insurance cost, and how can I lower it?

Shaurya Aggarwal 4 min read

Commercial auto is often one of the most expensive policies a small business buys, and the one with the widest price range. A florist with one van and a regional hauler with five tractors are both buying commercial auto, but their premiums are worlds apart. Here is what drives the number and what you can do about it.

Average commercial auto costs

Two large data sources give a useful picture. Insureon’s figures are medians for its customers, who mostly have fewer than five employees; 40% pay less than $200 a month and 29% pay between $200 and $400. Progressive Commercial publishes average monthly premiums for new policies by business type.

Average monthly commercial auto premium by business type (Progressive Commercial, 2025)
Business typeAverage per month
Contractors$260
Business auto (general)$276
Tow trucks$606
For-hire specialty trucking$734
For-hire transport trucking$926

Cost by state

Location matters a lot for auto: traffic density, accident and litigation rates, theft and state coverage requirements all feed into price. Insureon’s medians range widely.

California$154
North Carolina$187
Pennsylvania$226
New York$275
Georgia$305
Texas$326
Colorado$337
New Jersey$347
Florida$412

What drives your premium

Insureon lists seven main factors. The first three tend to move price the most.

  • Driving records: accidents, violations and years of experience for every listed driver.
  • Number and types of vehicles: a heavy truck costs more to insure than a sedan.
  • Industry and how vehicles are used: radius, cargo, and whether you carry people or goods for hire.
  • Claims history.
  • Where vehicles are garaged and operated.
  • Limits and deductibles.
  • Coverages chosen: liability only, or also collision and comprehensive (physical damage).

Ten ways to lower commercial auto costs

Some savings come from discounts; others come from managing risk so you look better to underwriters at renewal.

  • Hire carefully and check motor vehicle records before adding a driver. One driver with serious violations can raise the whole policy.
  • List only the drivers and vehicles you actually use, and remove sold vehicles promptly.
  • Consider telematics or usage-based programs, which some insurers discount (Progressive, for example, offers Snapshot ProView).
  • Pay in full if you can; Progressive lists paid-in-full savings among its discounts.
  • Bundle with other business policies; multi-policy discounts are common.
  • Keep continuous coverage. Progressive lists a prior-insurance discount, and lapses can raise future prices.
  • Raise physical damage deductibles, or reconsider collision coverage on older, paid-off vehicles whose value is low — but only if you could absorb the loss.
  • Describe radius and use accurately; overstating long-haul driving can cost you, and understating it risks a claim denial.
  • Use hired and non-owned auto for occasional employee driving rather than putting rarely used personal vehicles on a commercial policy.
  • Compare several insurers. Appetite for vehicle classes and industries differs, so prices for the same risk can vary widely.

Before you shop

Have a list of vehicles (year, make, model, VIN), drivers with license numbers and dates of birth, how far vehicles typically travel, what they carry, where they are parked overnight and your loss history for the past three to five years. Accurate information up front gives you quotes you can rely on rather than prices that change after underwriting checks your records.

Frequently asked questions

How much is commercial auto insurance per vehicle?

For small businesses with light vehicles, a few hundred dollars per vehicle per month is common: Progressive Commercial reports $276 a month on average for business auto in 2025. Heavy trucks and for-hire trucking cost much more.

Why is commercial auto more expensive than personal auto?

Business vehicles are often driven more, carry goods or equipment, are driven by multiple people and carry higher liability limits. Claims involving businesses also tend to be larger.

What is the cheapest commercial auto insurance?

There is no single cheapest company. Pricing depends on your vehicles, drivers, state and industry. Comparing quotes from several insurers for the same coverage is the reliable way to find a lower price.

Figures are third-party estimates and examples, not quotes. Coverage depends on the policy terms and underwriting, and rules vary by state.
