This review sets out what Northland Insurance is, who issues its policies, what its trucking coverage includes and how claims work, based on Northland’s own pages as of November 2026.
What Northland Insurance is and how buying works
Northland describes itself as a trucking insurance company whose customers range from owner-operators to large fleets, and as a division of Travelers. Its history page says it was founded in 1948 in St. Paul, Minnesota, by the Hamm Brewing family to write auto physical damage for the family’s delivery trucks. It began writing liability and cargo coverage in 1964 and became part of Travelers in the 2000s, when its parent company was acquired.
Buying works through agents only. Northland says it is represented by transportation general agents, who underwrite and issue policies on its behalf, and that retail agents access its products by working with one of those general agents. Its agent finder lets you search for independent retail agents by state and lists all 50 states and Washington, D.C., as of November 2026.
The company named on your policy depends on where you are. Northland’s California notice names Northland Insurance Company and Northland Casualty Company, both domiciled in Hartford, Connecticut. For Texas customers, Northland states that insurance is provided by Consumers County Mutual Insurance Company and administered by Northland Insurance Company.
Coverage it offers and for whom
Northland markets the same core products to owner-operators and fleets. Its auto liability page says primary liability policies automatically include $2,500 of defense costs for identity theft claims and up to $2,500 of family emergency travel expenses if an insured is hospitalized or killed in an accident in a covered auto.
Northland says it makes FMCSA and state motor carrier filings when required, and that filings are free with same-day service if your agent submits them by 2:30 p.m. Central time. On physical damage, finance value coverage is automatically included when the stated limit exceeds the finance value of a truck, rental reimbursement can pay for up to 120 days after a covered loss and tools and equipment can be insured under an inland marine equipment floater.
| Coverage | What Northland lists |
|---|---|
| Commercial auto liability | MCS-90 at no added cost when required; pollution included with MCS-90; additional insured endorsements at no added cost |
| Optional liability add-ons | Hired and non-owned auto, trailer interchange, garagekeepers, bobtail, IANA intermodal endorsement, deductible reimbursement |
| Physical damage | Collision, fire, theft, hail, vandalism and flood; tarps, chains and binders and towing after a covered loss included |
| Motor truck cargo | Premier and Custom forms; named shipper, specified trip and contingent cargo add-ons |
| General liability for truckers | Options include employers’ liability, employee benefits, additional insured and the XTEND endorsement |
| Roadside assistance and towing | $500 roadside and $2,500 towing per disablement, $250 deductible |
Cargo forms, Deluxe coverage and roadside limits
Northland offers two cargo forms. Premier Cargo is its core form; the page lists broad commodity coverage with minimal exclusions, livestock, temperature protection, load shift, earned freight, debris and pollution removal and reward coverage for stolen property, and says the form has no coinsurance clause and meets typical freight broker requirements. Custom Cargo is a scheduled-vehicle form with a narrower set of benefits and buy-backs for temperature control units, electronics, copper and aluminum, hard liquor and pharmaceuticals.
Deluxe coverage is a bundle bought with physical damage. Northland says its diminishing deductible cuts the physical damage deductible by 25% for each loss-free year, so no deductible applies by the fifth year. The bundle also applies a single deductible when several covered autos are involved in one loss, pays up to $2,500 for the driver’s personal effects and pays downtime or rental costs of up to $100 a day for a maximum of 30 days.
Roadside coverage reimburses towing to the nearest capable repair facility, jump starts, flat tires, lockouts, fluid delivery and winching within 100 feet of a road. Northland says it does not apply when the disablement is caused by an accident, it is limited to 2 disablements per vehicle and availability varies by state.
Who it suits and who it may not
Based on the products Northland lists, it is built for for-hire trucking operations rather than general small businesses. The operations listed below line up most closely with its pages.
It may not fit if you want to compare and buy online yourself, since every policy goes through an agent. Workers’ compensation does not appear among the products on its trucking pages as of November 2026, so a fleet with employees should plan to arrange that separately.
- Owner-operators and fleets that want liability, physical damage, cargo and trucker general liability from one insurer
- Leased owner-operators who need bobtail cover and reimbursement of deductibles owed to a fleet under a lease
- Intermodal haulers whose contracts call for an IANA-compliant endorsement
- Carriers hauling temperature-sensitive, high-value or theft-prone freight that need cargo buy-backs or higher named shipper limits
- Fleets with their own shop that work on others’ equipment and need garagekeepers coverage
How claims and service work
Northland says claim reporting is available 24/7/365 at 800-328-5972, and claims can also be sent by fax, email or an online form. It asks drivers to call the claim center once they are safe from the scene of a significant accident or theft.
According to Northland, rapid response teams are sent to accident sites to preserve evidence. It says customers have access to Travelers Staff Counsel, which has more than 1,000 attorneys, including more than 90 designated to Northland customers, and to a forensic laboratory staffed by more than 50 engineers, scientists and technicians.
Northland’s Special Investigations Group works on cargo theft prevention and recovery investigations, and Northland says it has recovered more than $130 million in stolen goods since 2009. Its agent materials also list online driver safety training, and its liability page promotes a telematics program with eligibility rules your agent can explain.
What to compare and ask before buying
Before you accept a Northland quote, check these points against your contracts and your other quotes:
- Which company will issue the policy in your state, including Consumers County Mutual in Texas
- Whether the cargo quote uses the Premier or Custom form, and which buy-backs your commodities need
- Whether your cargo limit meets your broker and shipper contracts, or a named shipper or trip endorsement is needed
- Whether Deluxe coverage and roadside are included, and whether $100 a day for 30 days of downtime is enough
- The stated value of each truck, including tarps, chains and binders, and how finance value coverage applies
- Whether you qualify for the telematics program and what it requires
How it fits with getting several quotes
Northland does not publish rates on its site, and its pages note that coverage depends on underwriting and state rules and that discounts vary by state and risk. What you pay turns on your operation, radius, commodities, drivers and loss history.
The useful comparison is several quotes built on the same liability limit, cargo limit, deductibles and add-ons. A broker such as Florin can compare quotes from several insurers side by side so you can see how a trucking specialist’s terms stack up against others for your operation.
